“I’ve been feeling depressed and sad lately.”
“I don’t know why I’m so worried and anxious about everything.”
“My job is too stressful. I can never relax.”
“I thought I could get over this on my own, but it’s not getting better.”
Stress can be overwhelming. In addition to the emotional toll that stress can take, we may experience repeated physical symptoms such as fatigue, headaches, insomnia, or digestive problems. Ongoing stress can also lead us to alter our behavior in unhealthy ways as we attempt to cope.
It has been reported that more than 18 percent of adults in the U.S. suffer from significant anxiety, disrupting their ability to effectively participate in their normal daily routines. Anxiety can cause you to feel irritable, tired, distracted, sick to your stomach, or restless. It may also show up as a pervasive sense of fear or worry that gets increasingly worse over time. Some people have anxiety attacks (also known as panic attacks) or have difficulty leaving their home because of anxious feelings.
CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy) is effective in reducing symptoms of stress and anxiety. CBT is a supportive process in which I guide you through better understanding your thoughts and feelings, learning coping skills, and over time gradually changing your behavior and thoughts for a different outcome. Many people find that CBT helps them feel less driven by anxiety and have greater self-acceptance.
While many people experience mild or moderate stress due to everyday pressures at work or at home, a certain kind of debilitating stress response can happen when someone experiences a frightening or life-threatening incident. I specialize in providing support with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and helping people to find healing after experiencing traumas such as sexual, emotional, or physical abuse.
People in minority groups may experience an added layer of stress or anxiety from navigating life within systems that are not supportive. I have worked with many Asian Pacific Islanders, African Americans, and Latinx people, as well as immigrants and refugees.
Let’s talk about how counseling for stress and anxiety might help you.
