Is your teen struggling with issues like these?

Teens have a lot on their shoulders. It’s not unusual for young people ages 13-18 to experience stress and anxiety related to academic pressures, negative self-image related to body changes, and the challenging terrain of navigating peer relationships. Some teens may be carrying additional burdens as survivors of sexual abuse or other traumatic events.

My Approach to Therapy with Teens

It’s my belief that all humans need support sometimes when life gets really challenging. I have been in therapy myself at various times, and I share this fact honestly from the beginning of my work with a teen client. With this approach, I am able to normalize mental health support in order to build trust and help them engage in the therapy process.

My therapeutic style is warm, straightforward, and engaging without being overly directive. Teens typically respond well to this approach, which lets them feel in control of how the online therapy process unfolds while also offering a supportive structure of moving toward collaborative goals.

Support for Teen Parents

One of my specialty areas is teen parenting. I am open about the fact that I was a teen parent myself, which means I can truly empathize with the emotional and social challenges faced by a teen in this situation. Teens who are struggling with parenting at a young age, in a culture that tends to stigmatize this circumstance, can trust that I will provide nonjudgmental support.

Benefits of Online Therapy/Counseling with Teens

Providing therapy in an online format can be an advantage with teens, who tend to be very comfortable communicating online (through texting, social media, or video chat) and may be more willing to talk with a counselor this way than in person. In particular, a teen may feel more open to sharing private information with a therapist who is not physically “in the room” but is able to offer reflective listening, psychoeducation, and problem-solving support in a virtual format.
