I know how confusing and overwhelming it can feel to search for a therapist or counselor, because I’ve been in your shoes. I have been in therapy myself at times when I needed help and tools for some of the challenges that life has sent my way, and I always encourage newly graduated therapists to experience counseling for themselves in order to better serve their clients.
Counselors often feel called to do this work because of experiences in their personal lives that allow them greater compassion for other people’s struggles. However, many counselors and therapists choose not to admit these past difficulties to their clients. I prefer to be straightforward about my own human need for support, and I believe that my personal history of coping with challenging circumstances makes me a better counselor.
Growing up, I heard a lot of negative things about therapy. You may have also experienced a cultural stigma against the idea of talking about your innermost thoughts and feelings with someone other than family or friends. However, I’m here to tell you that counseling can be helpful for anyone who is seeking support with anxiety, stress, self-esteem, or life-changing transitions.
Sometimes being human means that we face challenges that are difficult to navigate alone. This was my personal experience as a teen parent, and it inspired me at age 16 to set my sights on becoming a social worker.
In my personal and professional experience, a trained counselor can provide a compassionate witness to your experience as well as valuable tools to make the journey easier. My clients describe me as straightforward, approachable, and kind as well as knowledgeable.
My hobbies outside of work include gardening and playing arcade games (my favorite is Street Fighter II). I have a personal mindfulness practice that incorporates both breath awareness and mindfulness meditation.
